Based on the costumes, food and music of New Orleans’ most celebrated event, the Northern Rhode Island Council on the Arts (NRICA) presents Woonsocket Mardi Gras 2010. The Mardi Gras Ball will be emceed by WNRI’s Jeff Gamache, with local band Slippery Sneakers, along with Jeffrey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys of Louisiana playing Zydeco tunes. A Cajun-style buffet will be catered by Gary McLaughlin and includes red beans and rice with spicy sausage, Creole pork, chicken gumbo, Cajun-style catfish and shrimp etouffée, among other tasty treats. A cash prize will be awarded to the person who correctly guesses the identity of this year’s King Jace, who will be unmasked during the celebration.

Enroll in the 2010 Best Places To Work program Welcome to the “real-whirled”
At Perishable Theatre’s ongoing interactive music series, “Live/Whirled,” audience members will enjoy arrangements of American and European folk music and original compositions as performed by The Essential Quintet. The quintet, directed by renowned composer Steven Jobe, will feature Jobe on the viola and hurdy-gurdy, leading fellow musicians Ellen Santaniello, Cathy Clasper-Torch, Catherine Hawkes and Seth Gruenwald in the first half of the show. During the second half, the audience will be invited to participate as band members teach anyone willing to learn the steps and lyrics to a traditional medieval round dance. The Live/Whirled, developed by Perishable Artistic Director Vanessa Gilbert and American/Brazilian mandolinist Marilynn Mair, is designed to combine performance with collaborative and improvisational elements. Audience members are invited to bring along an acoustic instrument.

Premieres and Pas De Deux
Festival Ballet Providence will present the second program from its award-winning Up Close on Hope dance series this Saturday. “Program 2: Tudor and New Works,” will feature works from London-born choreographer Antony Tudor, considered a master of expression. The performance will include a pas de deux, a ballet performance choreographed for two dancers, from Tudor’s “The Leaves are Fading,” as well as the company’s premiere of Tudor’s “Continuo.” The company will also premiere the famous Pas de Dix from the Hungarian ballet “Raymonda.” The except of the third act is so famous it is often performed independently. Festival Ballet Providence will perform other dance pieces from around the world as well as modern choreography.

Birds are as birds do
Stop by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center this weekend and catch the “Sunday Nature Flixs” program. ASRI will be screening excerpts from the 10-part, 5-volume series “The Life of Birds,” by David Attenborough. The film series examines not the different species, but rather the day-to-day behavior of birds throughout the world. Attenborough is one of Britain’s foremost broadcasters, and his series on birds presents a different angle on a nature film while providing entertaining commentary.

Supporting history through celebration
The Providence Preservation Society (PPS) will host a “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”-themed celebration. The society’s seventh annual winter bash will be held this Saturday night in Downtown Providence overlooking Burnside Park and Capital Center. More than 600 people are expected to gather to celebrate restoration efforts throughout the city. The event will feature music performed by Latin-rock group Santa Mamba, and will include specialty drinks and a cash bar. Festive attire, black tie or funky-cocktail attire is encouraged. Bring a mask or purchase one at the event. Proceeds from the 2010 Winter Bash will support the advocacy and education programs offered by PPS.

Cuba Va
The University of Rhode Island Feinstein Campus Gallery is in the midst of hosting “Household Saints: African Spirituality in Cuban Art and Culture.” The exhibit has come to Rhode Island from the Cuban Art Space at the Center for Cuban Studies, located in New York City since 1972. The first floor of the URI Feinstein Campus Gallery includes a retrospective of works from Cuban artists over the past 40 years. The second floor gallery features a work entitled “Household Altar to the Empress Oya,” created by a local artist with Cuban heritage, as well as a photographic documentary on Santeria altars and thrones by Paul Daglieri. On Friday, Central Falls High School presents dance, drumming and spoken word, combining traditions from the West African, Latin, Cape Verdean, and Hip-Hop cultures. Original vocal and instrumental music will be performed by Central Falls High School graduate Jose Docen.

Darwin in the Athenaeum
The Providence Athenaeum is hosting its annual fundraising gala this Friday. “GALApagos: A Celebration of Exploration,” will highlight the special collections, programs and the history of the building itself, which was designed by famed Philadelphia architect William Strickland in the 19th century. The Aurea Ensemble will perform an original work produced especially for this event. In addition, the library will feature an exhibit on the discoveries of Charles Darwin and his peers from its 19th century collection. Blackstone caterers will provide the food, with wine donated by Campus Fine Wines. A raffle will be held as part of the event; proceeds will be split between the lucky winner and the Athenaeum.

Roger Williams Park will play host to An Evening Uncorked: A Celebration of Food and Wine. M.S. Walker will provide the wines, which have been selected to pair with foods from 10 Rhode Island restaurants, including 1149 Restaurant, 3 Steeple Street, Blaze Restaurant, Capital Grille, Gracie’s, Haruki, New Rivers, Nick’s on Broadway, Pot Au Feu and Trio. A collection worth remembering
The Preservation Framer and Gallery owners Matt Slobogan and Rob Dziubek are kicking off the gallery’s second year by presenting pieces from artist Luis Kerch’s collection. The opening reception for the artist will be held this Saturday. Kerch, of Tenirife, Spain, will show pieces from his “Travel Through Memories” collection for the month of February. Kerch has garnered international recognition for his dreamlike acrylic on canvas compositions.

Two-for-one
The University of Rhode Island’s Department of Music is hosting Boston-based saxophonist Jared Sims as part of the University Artist Series. Sims, who instructs at URI, will perform in a split program – half classical music, half jazz selections. Sims also promises “a few surprises.” Sims will be joined by pianist Jessie Lo, bassist David Zinno and jazz percussionist Steve Langone. The concert is being held following the Rhode Island Music Educators Association Jazz Festival, held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day. Proceeds from the event will support URI Music Department scholarships.
