The Providence Children’s Film Festival launches this weekend, with numerous flicks and events at the Cable Car Cinema and the Rhode Island School of Design’s Metcalf Auditorium. The new festival hits the town running, with shorts, animated works, full-length features and documentaries designed to be a shared theatrical experience for the community and for families. Attendees also will be able to attend workshops and fun activities over the four-day event. On the Web site, all shows and times are listed and parents will find a range of films for different age groups and a useful guide on content and age appropriateness.
LOCATION: Metcalf Auditorium, Chace Center, 20 North Main St., Providence; Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main St., Providence. Friday, Feb. 12, through Monday, Feb. 15. Movies shown at the Metcalf Auditorium are free; seating is limited; tickets are required and available starting on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the festival information table in the lobby of the Chace Center. For Cable Car events, $7.50 general admission; $5 children 18 and under; $5 students and seniors.

Cicilline, Mike Ritz of Connect Providence and Providence Media for the second annual “I Heart Providence.” The event, which is open to the public, will offer complimentary hors d’oeuvres, drinks and live music inside City Hall. Following that, there will be an after-party at Aspire Restaurant. In addition, local artist Carla Ricci will arrange lights in One Financial Plaza to create a heart spanning six floors of the building. Food will be provided by Cutie Pies, Sin Custom Cakes and Tip C Cakes. Queen of Hearts Providence will provide arts and crafts.

The Newport Art Museum is in the midst of its 83rd annual Winter Lecture Series. This Saturday, visit the museum to hear Malcolm Grear, who has been selected to give this year’s Cora Lee Gibbs Lecture. Grear is a designer and educator, and has enjoyed a 50-year career in visual communication. His lecture, “Seeing is Believing,” will provide audiences with an inside look at some of his design projects. He taught for the Rhode Island School of Design’s Graphic Design department for 28 years. Attendees are encouraged to bring cans of soup to be donated to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Spend a day in the lap of luxury at the Chabot Fine Art Gallery. The gallery will be hosting Wm. H. Harris Furs of Warwick and Gasbarro Wines for the “A Valentine to Remember” event. Local roaster Custom House Coffee is sponsoring the first Barista Jam competition on Aquidneck Island this weekend. Come out to the Middletown location to watch professional baristas compete to prepare the perfect latte. Judging will be based on free-pour latte art, with designs created in pouring the steamed milk and foam. The top two competitors will receive espresso-themed prizes. Rhode Island College welcomes pianist Steven Mayer on Sunday. Mayer is a professor at the International Keyboard Institute and an associate professor of music at the University of Denver. He will play a mix of European and American compositions, drawing from both classical and jazz genres. Selections include Beethoven’s Sonata in B Flat major, Op. 22, and Gottschalk’s “Bamboula,” as well as several pieces from contemporary composer Art Tatum.
