Treasure, trash and secret gifts
Find a trove of original work by artists Joan Wyand and Will Machin at the AS220 Project Space at tonight’s opening reception for “New Works.” The collaboration between these two issues a tidal wave of energy and talent, with a touch of tongue-and-cheek cultural commentary. “New Works” will be a smorgasbord of found-object sculpture. Wyand’s installation features an illustrative series of 3-D collages that combine artifacts from Narragansett Bay and ceramics. Machin’s sculptural work presents a combination of roadside waste with mortar to create brick-like textures. The exhibition asks viewers to question perceptions of objects that have been disposed of and objects as works of art.

LOCATION: AS220's Project Space, 93 Mathewson St. Providence. Thursday, April 1, 6 to 9 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Culturally green by design
With the push for greener practices across all industries in the past decade, William Green, professor of landscape architecture at the University of Rhode Island, points out that “sustainable design does not come in one flavor.” Through his hands-on work, long-distance travels and specific conversations with designers from other countries, Green recognized the vital importance of culture and social conditions, the root factors for what kind of designs are appropriate and achievable. Green will discuss his exploration of sustainable design in South Africa and Australia with his talk on “Context and Sustainability: The Role Context Plays in Determining Opportunities.”

LOCATION: University of Rhode Island, Coastal Institute, Weaver Auditorium, Kingston (this is building 13 on the north end of main campus). Thursday, April 1, 7 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Wading into water
The members of the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative have put together a juried exhibit exploring the theme of water through 3- and 2-dimensional art. In the beginning of February, members of the collaborative submitted photography, fine art, painting, sculpture and collage that referenced water – as it appears in nature. Alexandra Broches, an artist, photographer and member of Wakefield’s Hera Gallery, chose from the submissions those works that reflected the fluctuating state of water. Art work features various depictions of vapor, clouds, icebergs, glaciers and rivers, among other images. How appropriate for the current state of the state.

LOCATION: Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, 175 Main St., Pawtucket. Saturday, April 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free and open to the public. Reception and panel discussion to take place later in the month, check the Web site for event schedule.
