There is a referendum question being proposed for the November ballot that will have Ocean State residents decide whether to keep the state name as “The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.” To help inform voters, the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society in Kingston has prepared an exhibition of the history of the word “plantation” in Rhode Island, starting in the 1600s and reaching all the way to the present. When exiting the exhibition, visitors can use the McTammany Ballot Company’s 1900 voting booth to express their views on the “plantation” issue. The exhibit will begin Saturday and will remain on display until voting day.
