P.S. I love you
One way to support public education is to support the students themselves. This weekend, 24 school districts, 600 students and 350 unique pieces of artwork will be shown in the “PS 2010” exhibit presented by URI Feinstein Providence Campus and the Rhode Island Alliance for Art Education. This annual event, the Richard W. & Ronald S. Buteau Memorial Exhibit, attempts to draw a connection between the hard work and dedication of teachers and students to the importance and positive influence of art in school curriculum. The size of the exhibit would be evidence enough, but it is perhaps the individuality of all the work that expresses the important relationship between creative thinking and basic skills.

LOCATION: URI Providence Campus Gallery, first and second floor, lobby gallery, 80 Washington St., Providence. Thursday, May 27, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Happy Birthday, Rhode Island!
On May 29, 1790, Rhode Island became the 13th state in the United States, the last of the original colonies to ratify the Constitution. Put that feather in your cap, slap on some new threads and rustle up the children for a day spent celebrating this 220th anniversary at the Providence Children’s Museum. The children will make pennants featuring Rhode Island symbols and sites, browse books about the state, and find your city or town on a map. Attendees will also meet bona fide Rhode Island Red chickens and chicks from a local farm and learn about the life cycle of these feathered friends from farm educators. There also will be an opportunity to sample coffee milk – do you remember your first time? – and toast the day.

LOCATION: Providence Children’s Museum, 100 South St., Providence. Saturday, May 29, noon to 2 p.m. $7.50 per person; appropriate for children ages 5 to 11.

Walk this way
The Rhode Island Historical Society was founded in 1822 and is the country’s fourth oldest state-historical society. Its museum and library holdings include 25,000 artifacts, 150,000 printed volumes, more than 350,000 images and more than 6,000 manuscript collections. With that kind of archive, you know the society means business about protecting and promoting the history of the state. This weekend, jump in on a vibrant opportunity to understand history: location-based, story telling. Join Ray Rickman, a well-known community leader, as he takes you on a 90-minute walk through Providence’s oldest neighborhood, College Hill. Rickman will offer his perspective and celebrate the life of African Americans who lived in this historic area from 1701 through the modern day.

LOCATION: John Brown House Museum, 52 Power St., Providence. Saturday, May 29, departs at 10 a.m. $10 per person; space is limited; reservations are required. For more information or to make reservations, call Dalila Goulart at (401) 331-8575 ext. 45.
