| Music at sunset The 2010 Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series continues this Friday with Boz Skaggs. The Grammy-award winner was last in Newport for the 2008 Sunset Series. He returns this year during his tour supporting his latest album, “Speak Low.” Slide guitarist and modern roots singer-songwriter David Jacobs-Strain, who opened for Skaggs on the singer’s 2008 tour, will also return to the Newport Yachting Center as the opening act this Friday. The Courtyard will have concessions including burgers, shrimp kabobs and a full bar. LOCATION: Newport Yachting Center, 4 Commercial Wharf, Newport. | | Synch your summer to Sound Session Sound Session is a summer music event that defies the traditional boundaries of music festivals to bring an eclectic variety of talent. Held each July in Providence, the week-long event makes use of multiple stages to host performances by artists from various genres and also includes a Mardi Gras-style parade. This Thursday, Blaze Restaurant will host a pre-Sound Session 2010 Kickoff Party. Those who attend will be able to learn about Sound Session and what goes into planning the festival. You’ll get the inside scoop on who, what, when and where of Sound Session, including how you can volunteer. Board members will also speak about the event. | Baseball with a bang! The Blackstone River Valley Tourism Council invites you to join the celebration the United States’ 234th birthday this weekend. In addition to local communities hosting events recognizing the Fourth of July, the weekend will also feature a Rhode Island tradition at McCoy Stadium. The Pawtucket Red Sox will play evening games against the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees on Thursday and Friday and against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs on Saturday. Each of the three games will be followed by a stunning fireworks presentation. LOCATION: McCoy Stadium, 1 Columbus Ave., Pawtucket. | The Breakers gets a new voice The Preservation Society of Newport County’s new audio tour for The Breakers is now available for those visiting the estate. The Breakers introduces itself as the tour guide, leading you through the historic Vanderbilt summer home while sharing its history and its secrets. The Preservation Society created the tour from 10 years of research, oral histories from family members and staff who have lived there, and the main audio tour “The Breakers Revealed.” The new tour includes themes of architecture, design, décor and personal presentation. It is available as an option on the audio tour players provided to all guests at no additional charge. LOCATION: The Breakers, 44 Ochre Point Ave., Newport. | Theater for the airwaves Perishable Theatre presents a night of short plays designed for radio this Friday. “Breathing Tube” will include traditional radio theater pieces, as well as more inventive interpretations of the genre. The works featured in Friday’s show are “Cookie Bells” by Kenny Cahoon, “Great Whites: Episode 2 – White on Rice” by Cyrus Leddy, “Walker’s Annie” by Walker Mettling, and “Ugly Duckling” by Hillary Rhodes. Perishable Theatre helps local performance artists learn and develop through its Residence Artists program. | Get into the hall of fame Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, part of the ATP World Tour, will be held in Newport next week, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum is gearing up with Family Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. Activities include museum tours, tennis-themed crafts, virtual tennis for the Nintendo Wii and more. There will be Quick Start Tennis, a program introducing children ages 4-10 to the game, and Junior Tennis Clinics for youth ages 8-16. The Rossetti Brothers will host a presentation and demonstration on both days. Professional tennis players will be on the courts in the qualifying tournament for next week’s championship. | Tracking the lives of songbirds The Audubon Society of Rhode Island invites you watch as Steve Reinert demonstrates the process of bird banding. Bird banding includes the capture, band, measure and release of song birds in order to track their movement. The techniques for each step of the process will be demonstrated and explained before the birds are released. Experts will also discuss the migratory habits and life history of each kind of species used in the demonstration. It is recommended that participants bring a camera and binoculars. | Recalling Broadway’s golden age “Hello, Dolly!” is a Tony-award winning family musical full of dancing and classic tunes from the 1890s. The show, by Jerry Herman, comes to the stage of Theatre by the Sea this week. Ocean State Theatre Company welcomes Cady Huffman, from the original Broadway production of “The Producers,” to the role of Dolly Levi. Joining Huffman is Al Bundonis (Laurence from “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”) in the role of Horace Vandergelder. Kevin P. | Philharmonic on the Fourth The Rhode Island Philharmonic Pops Orchestra will begin its 2010 Summer Pops series on Sunday with a Fourth of July concert at India Point Park. The philharmonic will perform a variety of music works, including selections from the musicals “South Pacific” and “Wicked,” a salute to Frank Sinatra and other pieces. Resident conductor Francisco Noya will lead the concert. Noya has served as the music director of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra in Boston for 12 seasons and is a member of the conducting faculty at the Berklee College of Music.
