The free event – part of the Works in Progress 2010 fundraising series – will feature more than 70 classic and custom vehicles, music and raffles, as well as food sold by Haven Brothers. The event will also provide an opportunity to take tours of studios at the 10,000-sqaure-foot-space, which plays host to sculptural installations, metal-smithing events and creative performances. Take advantage of this chance to witness some of Providence’s finest creative talents.

IMAGE COURTESY THE STEEL YARD | | | | | Pop icons, Southwestern style 17 Peck Gallery will host an opening reception for its new exhibition, “Pop Icon Show,” which features the works of artist Nocona Burgess. The great-great grandson on Comanche Chief Quanah Parker, Burgess has traveled throughout his life – first with his parents while they earned their degrees, and later as a part of the touring exhibit “They Called Us Indians.” Burgess holds an associate’s degree in fine arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts and a B.F.A. from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. He will present some of his original pieces for viewing and acquisition at 17 Peck Gallery.

Participants can take in the city’s art scene in a number of ways: AS220’s Xander Marro and Jay Zehngebot will lead bicycle riders from stop to stop; emerging/contemporary galleries can be visited under the aegis of Hive Archive Executive Director Alyssa Holland Short; university gallery visits will be led by Bob Dilworth; and a walking tour of downtown Providence galleries and the Providence Art Windows will be guided by artist Rebecca Siemering. A wheelchair accessible bus tour is also available.

The off-Broadway show follows four women – “Professional Woman,” “Soap Star,” “Iowa Housewife” and “Earth Mother” – who meet at a Bloomingdale’s lingerie sale. They sing of their ups and downs in dealing with menopause with parodies of classic, baby boom-era songs. Selections include “Stayin’ Awake” and “Puff, My God I’m Draggin’.” Due to popular demand, Trinity Rep has extended the engagement through July 25 – be sure to see the show before it leaves town.

Reptiles of Rhode Island will focus on the species of reptiles native to the area. Participants will get to see live turtles and a snake up close. The event will also feature an activity portion during which participants can learn to create stenciled reptile crafts using traditional techniques. Following the program will be a tour of the Smith-Appleby house and its original 19th-century stencils. Refreshments will be provided.

The theater will host “Live Bait: True Stories from Real People,” a storytelling event for grownups, this Saturday. The noncompetitive nature of the event brings a broad range of individuals together to tell their tales. Listen while others tell their stories, or get up and tell your own – performers and nonperformers are all welcome. Kevin Broccoli and Phil Goldman will host the show, with musical accompaniment by Jerry Gregoire. This “Live Bait” will focus on the theme of “coming out.” A portion of the proceeds will benefit Equity Action, a Rhode Island Foundation fund for sexual-orientation and gender-identity initiatives.

IMAGE COURTESY PERISHABLE | | | Golf Balls from Heaven The South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the second annual South County Golf Ball Drop Raffle. To enter, purchase a $5 raffle ticket, which will have a numbered golf ball assigned to it. On Sunday at the South County Hot Air Balloon Festival, the golf balls will be dropped from 100 feet in the air onto the mini golf course near the University of Rhode Island baseball field. The ball that goes into, or is closest to, each of the 24 designated holes wins the prize for that hole. First place wins $1,500 cash; second through fifth win $500 cash; the remaining prizes are gift certificates. Proceeds will help to support the chamber’s tourism activities.

IMAGE COURTESY WHOFISH.COM | | | Preview of a creature-feature “Little Shop of Horrors,” the rock musical made famous by its Broadway run and film adaptation, opens at the Theatre by the Sea this weekend. Take in a “preview” performance on Thursday or regular showings throughout the weekend. Aimee Turner will return this season as director of the musical, which tells the story of a florist with an unusual plant. Tim Robertson will serve as music director for a score that combines early rock ’n’ roll, doo-wop and Motown. The show will be choreographed by Ann Cooley, former line captain and choreographer for the Radio City Rockettes. Get your heart rate up with this show stopper that features as much fright as it does musical delight.

The program focuses on speaking, acting and performing Shakespeare in order to help broaden acting skills. This weekend, the students of GSI 2010 will demonstrate what they’ve learned in three performances of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Gamm’s production of the classic love story is co-directed by Steve Kidd, Gamm intern Hannah Lennett and Gamm actor Tom Gleadow. Take a break from the summer heat to see what GSI students have accomplished.
