One nation, one wooled
The nature-themed Wooly Fair carnival will take place at Monohasset Mill and The Steel Yard this weekend. The event includes musical performances and interactive art, mazes, sculptural installations and other assorted acts of merry mayhem. Attendees will have the opportunity to plant a flower in one of the Flower Tower’s portable container gardens, which will be donated to local schools, hospitals and other organizations. Other activities include minigolf, a circus-arts workshop and a tricycle rally. Artists, writers, designers, engineers and entrepreneurs from all over Providence will set up the fair. Costumes are highly encouraged and the afternoon activities are perfect for any age group.

Newport Music Festival: Bicentennial Tributes to Chopin and Schumann


Potluck in the park
Rhode Island Vegan Awareness is hosting a picnic at Colt State Park completely free of all animal byproducts. The nonprofit organization will provide veggie burgers, veggie dogs, watermelon, salads, desserts and other dishes. Attendees are asked to contribute a vegan dish as well. Also, to reduce waste, each person is asked to bring their own place setting. Raffles, vegan recipes and information will also be available. Rhode Island Vegan Awareness encourages guests to bring their bikes and explore the four miles of trails, go to the nearby beach, or just relax, play games or bring an instrument.

Celebrate independent arts
Greater Kennedy Plaza will be the venue for the third annual IndieArts Fest this Saturday. The festival will showcase a wide variety of DJs, bands, dancers, spoken-word artists and other performers. The Red Bull Music Academy will provide a two-hour workshop. Additionally, Providence Roller Derby will host a scrimmage match, while a skate park sponsored by Fountain of Youth will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Meanwhile, The Arts Exchange will host an open market of crafts, collectibles and local foods and beverages. Indigo Girls return
Some kinds of music can send you reeling with memories. Tonight, catch the Grammy Award-winning duo the Indigo Girls in Newport. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers will perform their contemporary folk music as part of the Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series at the Newport Yachting Center. After producing 10 other albums under a major label, the band released its latest album, “Poseidon and the Bitter Bug,” on its own independent label in 2008 – the last year they came to Newport. Acoustic duo Coyote Grace will open the show.

A royal affair
Royal Gallery will host its annual A Royal Taste of Art event this Thursday. Iron Works Tavern will provide appetizers and samplings of wines for the complimentary evening. Additionally, those who visit the gallery this month will have the opportunity to enter to win a $50 gift certificate to Iron Works. Royal Gallery director Munir Rihani will offer tours of the gallery. There will also be the opportunity to see the “Symphonies of Italy” exhibit, which is only open until the end of the month.

Multiple paths to prizes
Do you have a bike? Do you like to win free things? The Zeta II class of Leadership Rhode Island is encouraging Rhode Islanders to stay fit, support local businesses and appreciate the state’s natural beauty by hosting a Rhody Bike Path Passport contest. Those looking to participate can download a copy of the passport from the website, or obtain one from the Bayside YMCA or Cranston YMCA. While biking on the featured paths, collect stamps from local businesses. Pick up perks at places you’ve already been or find a few new locations on your way. Participants who collect stamps from three different paths by Oct. 15 will be entered into a drawing. The grand prize is worth at least $250.

A swingin’ time
The Rhode Island Historical Society’s Concerts Under the Elms series continues this week with a swing, jazz and blues concert. Thursday’s concert will feature Al Basile, a singer, songwriter, cornet player and poet. Basile’s jazz, blues and roots sounds have been included on TV shows, films and the CDs of other artists including Duke Robillard and Ruth Brown. His most recent album, “Soul Blue 7,” was released last year. His new band, Swing n’ Strings, features John deBossu on upright bass, Jerry Miller on guitar, and Bob Zuck on guitar and vocals.

Big sharks on the big screen
Audubon Society of Rhode Island presents various nature documentaries throughout the year in its Nature Flicks at Night series. On Thursday, the society’s Environmental Education will feature an episode of National Geographic’s series “Expedition Great White.” Watch as marine biologists, sport fishermen, crew and actor Paul Walker attempt to catch a great white shark off the coast of Baja, Calif. Once the shark is caught, the scientists will have just minutes to take DNA samples and attach a tracking device before releasing the fish unharmed. Your heartbeat should be racing just at the thought. Registration is required and seats are limited.

Sustaining the “biggest little”
Gallery Z hosts an Art, Food and Wine event on the last Thursday of each month to raise awareness for various organizations. The gallery’s Public Art Window will highlight the Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living, this month’s chosen organization. Apeiron’s mission is to transform Rhode Island into a sustainable state by promoting sustainable living practices. The evening will include potluck catering by Gallery Z and wines from Gasbarro’s Wines. It is also an opportunity to view the works currently on display at Gallery Z. Valet parking will be available next door at Zooma Trattoria.

Jam out with your toes out
Get the children dancing this weekend with a special musical event held on the grounds of the Gov. Henry Lippitt House. The 19th-century, Renaissance Revival home was given to Preserve Rhode Island in the 1980s to be restored and reopened as a museum. On Saturday afternoon, the Toe Jam Puppet Band will be performing on the museum’s grounds. The children’s musical group has performed its interactive show at schools, libraries and parks throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Tom Poitras provides the music, while Vinny Lovegrove serves as the emcee, comedian and storyteller. This Saturday, fiddler Jeff Angeley will join in the fun.
