Improved monitoring systems and stricter regulations on waste dumping are necessary to reduce the high levels of contamination in Mexico's Santiago river, researcher José Antonio Gómez Reyna of Guadalajara university told BNamericas.
Major projects such as the US$201mn Agua Prieta and the US$67mn El Ahogado wastewater treatment plants will have little effect due to the nature of the contamination, according to Gómez Reyna.
